High-Stakes Trial Over Future of AI Startup OpenAI to Begin With Jury Selection
A high-stakes court battle between Elon Musk and Sam Altman, co-founder of AI startup OpenAI, will begin on April 27th with jury selection. The trial is expected to determine the future of OpenAI’s mission to develop artificial intelligence for the benefit of humanity. Musk, who founded OpenAI alongside Altman and Greg Brockman in 2015, claims that his co-founders misled him into providing funding for the company, which he believes has abandoned its original mission to prioritize profits over its stated goal of developing AI to benefit humanity. However, OpenAI maintains that Musk’s lawsuit is a baseless attempt to disrupt a competitor and boost his own business ventures, such as SpaceX and xAI. Musk seeks to have Altman and Brockman removed from their positions and for the company to cease operating as a public benefit corporation. He also demands that the nonprofit receive up to $150 billion in damages if he prevails in his claim.
