Kindle Devices Facing EOL in 2026
Amazon is phasing out support for its older e-readers and tablets, including the first-generation Kindle released in 2007, as well as other models from 2012 onwards. The company will stop allowing users to purchase, borrow, or download new content on these devices starting May 20th, 2026. Existing users can still access their downloaded books and continue reading without interruption, but they won’t be able to update their accounts or re-register the devices after the deadline. Users who deregister or factory reset their older Kindles will lose the ability to reactivate them once the support period ends. To avoid losing access to purchased content, users should take steps to backup and transfer their books to newer Kindle devices before May 20th, 2026. The company’s decision is part of its effort to focus on newer e-reader models with improved display technology and additional features, ensuring a seamless user experience for customers. Amazon has not announced any plans to discontinue the older Kindle models entirely, but rather to phase them out in favor of more advanced devices that offer better performance and functionality.
