Meta to Discontinue Metaverse for Work
Meta is discontinuing its Horizon Workrooms metaverse platform, a virtual space designed for workers to collaborate, as part of its broader shift away from the concept of a dedicated work metaverse. The company announced in December that it would be rebranding itself as Meta, marking a significant change in direction. This move comes as Meta shifts its focus towards more consumer-oriented experiences. The discontinuation of Horizon Workrooms will take effect on February 16, 2026, with the platform no longer available for download or use. Additionally, Meta will stop selling its headsets and software as a service to businesses, including commercial SKUs of Meta Quest, effective February 20, 2026. This move marks a significant shift in Meta’s strategy, as it prioritizes consumer experiences over business-focused initiatives.
