National Science Board Demise Unleashes Uncertainty on Funding for NSF Research Projects
The Trump administration has dismissed the entire National Science Board (NSB), leaving the future of funding for crucial scientific research uncertain. The NSB, a non-partisan advisory body, played a pivotal role in guiding the National Science Foundation (NSF) and its allocation of limited resources. Historically low funding levels and delays in disbursing those funds have already impacted various research initiatives. The NSF has been instrumental in advancing groundbreaking technologies, including MRI imaging, cellphone technology, and educational platforms like Duolingo. The sudden loss of a trusted voice on scientific policy raises significant concerns about the impact on these programs. “This move is the latest example of the administration’s shortsightedness on science,” said Zoe Lofgren, ranking Democrat on the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee.
