Nvidia Invests $4 Billion in Photonics for AI Advancements
Nvidia has announced a significant investment in photonics technology, allocating $2 billion each to Lumentum and Coherent, with a focus on developing optical transceivers, circuit switches, and lasers for high-speed data transfer in its data centers. This strategic move aims to enhance energy efficiency, boost data transfer speeds, and increase bandwidth in future AI computing environments, building upon Nvidia’s existing investments in NVLink through its 2020 acquisition of Mellanox network hardware company. The non-exclusive multi-year deal with Lumentum includes a “multibillion purchase commitment” as part of the partnership.
