OpenAI Abandons Sora Video Generation Tool Amid Billion-Dollar Disney Deal Collapse
Following a surprise announcement on Tuesday, video generation tool Sora is no longer being developed or supported by OpenAI. The move comes after staff were informed that both the app and API access for developers would be discontinued due to a lack of progress in meeting expectations. Initially launched at the end of 2024, Sora was touted as a rival to TikTok’s short-form video platform, but it appears that efforts to develop and market the tool have stalled. The demise of Sora is also tied to OpenAI’s massive licensing deal with Disney, which collapsed amid reports that the company had failed to deliver on its promises. The $1 billion investment from Disney, announced in December 2024, was meant to secure access to OpenAI’s technology and characters for use in various Disney projects. However, it seems that this partnership has fallen through due to a lack of progress in developing Sora. As a result of the collapse of the deal, API access for developers will also be discontinued, effectively cutting off one of the main paths for Sora to gain traction in the market. The move marks another setback for OpenAI, which has been struggling to maintain momentum and address concerns over its handling of user data and content moderation.
