Perplexity Ordered to Cease Amazon-Enabled Shopping
A federal judge has ordered Perplexity’s web browser-based AI agents to stop accessing users’ Amazon accounts without authorization, citing evidence that suggests the company’s Comet browser is intruding on its marketplace and user data. Perplexity had been allowing its agents to make purchases on behalf of customers through its agentic shopping feature, which was deemed a potential security risk by Amazon. The tech giant had sought a court injunction to stop this practice, arguing that it was causing unauthorized transactions and compromising user privacy. In response to Amazon’s lawsuit, Perplexity has agreed to shut down the affected functionality, ensuring that users’ accounts are protected from unwanted purchases made without their consent.
