Retro Gaming on the Go: Can Abxylute's M4 Controller Deliver?
A compact wireless gamepad with a clever magnetic mount design promises to revolutionize retro gaming on the go, but its implementation is marred by stiff thumbsticks and inconsistent support. As a retro gaming enthusiast, I was excited when Apple opened its App Store to emulators in 2024. However, finding a controller that truly makes me want to fully embrace retro gaming on my phone has proven elusive. Clamp-on controllers like the Backbone Pro are too bulky for my liking, and using a standalone gamepad requires propping up my phone. The Abxylute M4, which debuted a few months ago, seemed to address these concerns with its compact wireless design and magnetic mount attachment system. This innovative approach allows me to easily attach and detach the controller from my iPhone, making it perfect for on-the-go gaming sessions. However, despite its promising concept, the M4’s implementation is flawed. The thumbsticks are stiff, requiring too much pressure to register movements, which can lead to frustrating gameplay experiences. Furthermore, the magnetic mount sometimes fails to securely attach to my phone, causing the controller to wobble or detach unexpectedly during use. While the Abxylute M4 shows promise as a retro gaming solution, its shortcomings prevent it from reaching its full potential. With further refinement and improvement, this innovative design could revolutionize mobile gaming, but for now, it remains a niche product that may appeal only to die-hard retro gamers willing to overlook its limitations.
