Smartphone sales on track for record-breaking decline
The International Data Corporation (IDC) is predicting a 12.9 percent drop in smartphone shipments this year, the lowest annual shipment volume in over a decade, as AI developers continue to strain global memory supplies. A recent report from the IDC suggests that memory prices will stabilize by mid-2027 but may not recover to their previous levels due to sustained demand from major tech companies like Google and Facebook. As a result of these trends, the average selling price for smartphones is poised to reach a record high of $523 this year, up 14 percent from last year. This increase will have a significant impact on the industry as consumers face higher prices for their devices.
