Social Media Platforms Implement Age Verification to Address Child Safety Concerns
In a bid to strengthen child safety measures online, social media platforms such as YouTube, Roblox, and Discord are implementing ID or facial scan verification requirements for full access to their services. The move is part of a growing trend towards increased age-gating on the internet. The App Store Accountability Act and Parents Over Platforms Act are two US bills that aim to have app stores verify users’ ages. Meanwhile, platforms like ChatGPT and Google are using AI models to identify and lock down accounts suspected of being underage until some form of identity verification can be proven. Discord has delayed its global age verification rollout until later in 2026 following user backlash. However, the platform is still working towards implementing the feature, citing that a “vast majority” of users will not see the new age verification setup. The implementation of age verification across social media platforms raises concerns about privacy, security, and censorship. As lawmakers continue to push for stronger child safety measures online, the debate surrounding online age-gating is expected to intensify in the coming months.
