UK Introduces New Law to Combat Deepfake Nudes
The UK government has introduced new legislation aimed at curbing the proliferation of non-consensual intimate deepfake images, following growing concerns over the misuse of AI technology such as Grok. The move is part of a broader push to tackle online harassment and abuse, with the Data Act, passed last year, already outlawing the creation or request for non-consensual intimate images. The new law will bring this measure into force, making it a criminal offense to create or distribute such images. Liz Kendall, Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, has confirmed that she will make this offense a priority in the newly proposed Online Safety Act. This legislation aims to strengthen online safety measures, including those targeting non-consensual intimate content. As part of this effort, authorities will work closely with tech companies to identify and remove such content from platforms, while also providing support for victims of deepfake-related abuse.
