US Homeland Security to Launch 5G-Powered Drone Experiments on Canada-US Border
The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is set to launch an experimental program that utilizes advanced technologies, including autonomous drones and ground vehicles, to gather intelligence along the increasingly porous US-Canada border. As part of a bilateral effort with its Canadian counterparts, DHS plans to deploy a network of small unmanned aerial systems (SUA), also known as “reconnaissance” drones, over the border region in late 2023 or early 2024. These drones will be capable of streaming real-time “battlefield intelligence” back to command centers using advanced fifth-generation wireless technology. According to sources familiar with the project, the experiment aims to test the feasibility and effectiveness of integrating various cutting-edge tools into a cohesive surveillance system, designed to enhance US border security and combat illicit activities such as human smuggling and drug trafficking.
