US Leads Global Surge in New Gas Power Plants as Data Centers Drive Demand
The US is now leading a global surge in new gas power plants being built to satisfy growing energy demand for data centers, with over a third of the 31% increase in gas-fired power generation globally expected to directly power these facilities. According to a recent analysis by the nonprofit Global Energy Monitor (GEM), almost a quarter of this growth is slated for the US, surpassing China’s lead as the country with the biggest increase in new gas power plants. The construction of more powerful hardware has sparked a significant rise in energy demand, driving the development of these new facilities and cementing the US’s position as a global leader in gas-fired power generation.
