Morocco and Senegal Set for 2025 AFCON Final Showdown
The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final will take place on Sunday at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, Morocco. The match pits Morocco against Senegal, with the Atlas Lions seeking to end a 50-year wait for their second Africa Cup title.
Morocco has been the focus of attention due to its significant spending spree, which has led to high expectations from fans and pundits alike. However, Senegal, the 2021 winner, is also looking to claim its second title. The build-up to the final has been marred by controversy, with the Senegalese Football Federation expressing concerns over security arrangements for their team’s arrival in Rabat.
The FSF issued a statement on Saturday morning criticizing the lack of adequate security measures, problems with accommodation and training facilities, and difficulties getting fair ticket allocation for supporters. The federation stated that these issues exposed players and staff to overcrowding and risks incompatible with the standards of a major competition.
Despite the controversy, both teams have performed well in the tournament, with Morocco buoyed by strong home support at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium. Senegal’s Sadio Mane has created 18 chances, the most in the tournament, while Edouard Mendy has been solid in goal. Idrissa Gana Gueye brings experience to the centre of the park for Senegal.
The final is expected to be a closely contested match between two top-ranked African teams. Morocco’s Brahim Diaz has been the standout player so far, scoring in each of the team’s first five games. The 2025 African Footballer of the Year award is also up for grabs, with Diaz and Achraf Hakimi among the contenders.
The match will take place on Sunday at 8pm GMT, with Al Jazeera Sport providing live commentary and build-up coverage from 16:00 GMT.
