German Far-Right Party AfD Gains Ground in Parliament
The Alternative für Deutschland (AfD), a party with an anti-immigration and pro-deportation platform, has become the second-largest party in Germany’s parliament. In 2026, the AfD is currently polling first.
Critics have expressed concerns about the AfD’s rise, citing potential implications for Germany’s multicultural democracy and the European Union. The AfD has rejected these accusations.
Mainstream parties have maintained a “firewall” of noncooperation with the AfD, preventing it from participating in government. However, it remains to be seen whether this strategy will remain effective.
A recent discussion on Al Jazeera English featured Mehdi Hasan, who challenged Maximilian Krah, an AfD member of parliament, on various topics including remigration and views on Muslims. The discussion was also joined by Gerald Knaus, chairman of the European Stability Initiative; Deborah Feldman, American German writer and commentator; and Ralph Schoellhammer, head of the Center for Applied History and IR Theory.
The AfD’s stance on immigration and deportation has sparked debate among experts and observers.
