Al Jazeera journalist killed in Israeli strike in Gaza is mourned

At Least 260 Journalists Killed in Gaza Since October 2023

A funeral procession for Mohammed Wishah, an Al Jazeera journalist killed in an Israeli drone strike, was held in central Gaza on Thursday. The event drew dozens of relatives, friends, and colleagues to pay their respects to the deceased. Wishah’s body was carried on his shoulders by mourners before being buried according to his wishes.

The ceremony took place at Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir el-Balah, where Wishah had once delivered live reports for Al Jazeera Mubasher. During the funeral, Ismail al-Thawabta, director of Gaza’s Government Media Office, stated that Wishah’s killing was part of a pattern of crimes committed by Israeli forces against Palestinian journalists.

Al-Thawabta reported that 262 journalists have been killed in Gaza since the start of the war in October 2023. He warned that targeting reporters aims to silence witnesses and prevent the transmission of images of crimes to the world.

Family members described Wishah’s final hours, stating that he had shared a meal with his family just hours before leaving for a reporting assignment. Contact was lost until his killing was confirmed. Wishah had reported from the field for years and continued working throughout the war despite escalating risks.

Al Jazeera Media Network has condemned the killing as a “heinous crime” and stated that it forms part of a deliberate effort to intimidate media workers and prevent them from reporting on the ground. The network holds Israeli forces fully responsible, stating that the killing fits into a broader pattern of systematic attacks on its journalists.
