Cape Verde Prepares for FIFA World Cup Knockout Match Against Argentina

Cape Verde Advances to World Cup Knockout Stage

The island nation of Cape Verde has achieved an unprecedented feat in the FIFA World Cup, becoming the smallest country to reach the knockout stages of the competition. With a population of just over half a million inhabitants, expectations were low for the team on their debut appearance in the tournament.

Cape Verde finished second in Group E, registering three points and holding each of the title favourites Spain, Uruguay, and Saudi Arabia to a draw. This achievement sent them to the last 32, where they will face reigning champions Argentina in a highly anticipated match.

The Blue Sharks’ success can be attributed to their football talent recruitment strategy, which has tapped into their large diaspora community of promising players. Six of the starting 11 that played in their final group game against Saudi Arabia were born outside the country, including three from the Netherlands and two from France.

Cape Verde’s goalkeeper, Vozinha, has been a key player in their campaign, keeping two clean sheets in three games and making seven saves in their goalless draw with Spain. His impressive display has made him an overnight sensation on social media, with his Instagram follower count increasing to 17.4 million.

The team will face Argentina in the round of 32 on Friday at 5pm GMT in Miami. Cape Verde’s centre-back Diney Borges and defensive midfielder Kevin Pina have also played crucial roles in their success so far, scoring a goal each alongside Helio Varela.

This is not Cape Verde’s first major tournament appearance. They have participated in four Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and reached the quarterfinals in 2013 and 2023. The team is ranked 64th globally and is nicknamed “Tubaroes Azuis” – Portuguese for “Blue Sharks”.
