Algeria to Face Nigeria in Africa Cup of Nations Quarterfinal
A quarterfinal match is scheduled for Saturday at 5pm (16:00 GMT) at the Marrakech Stadium in Marrakesh, Morocco. Algeria will face Nigeria in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
In their previous matches, Algeria have maintained a strong defensive record, conceding only once in four games. However, they will be tested by Nigeria’s attacking prowess, which has scored 12 goals in the tournament so far.
The Nigerian team features a deadly duo in Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen, who will face off against Algeria’s reliable goalkeeper Luca Zidane. The match is expected to be a high-scoring affair, with both teams having shown their attacking capabilities in previous matches.
In Nigeria’s last game, an incident involving Osimhen and teammate Ademola Lookman occurred when the two players had a confrontation on the field during a match against Mozambique. Osimhen was substituted into the game after becoming increasingly disengaged from play.
Algeria advanced to the knockout stage with three wins in their previous group matches, while Nigeria also secured a spot in the quarterfinals with a 100 per cent record in Group C. The winner of this match will face the winner of the Cameroon vs Morocco quarterfinal.
The Algerian team has been led by key player Riyad Mahrez, who has scored three goals in four matches. Other influential players include Ibrahim Maza and Anis Moussa, while goalkeeper Luca Zidane has kept clean sheets in all three appearances so far. Nigeria’s star striker Victor Osimhen will look to bounce back from his previous match, where he was substituted due to a disagreement with teammate Ademola Lookman.
The winner of this quarterfinal match will advance to the semifinals, which will be held on January 14 in Rabat.
