Protesters from India’s Gen Z Cockroach Party Gather in New Delhi
A group of young protesters, affiliated with the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), held their first rally in New Delhi on Saturday. The demonstration, which drew attention to education minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation, was organized by Abhijeet Dipke, a recent graduate from Boston University.
Dipke and hundreds of others gathered at Jantar Mantar, a designated protest site in the capital, to voice their concerns over the government’s handling of education. The protesters cited issues with paper leaks and discrepancies in the country’s largest school boards as key reasons for their demands.
The movement gained momentum after Dipke’s casual joke about cockroaches coming together on social media went viral, attracting over 22 million followers on Instagram. However, the protesters are now serious about their cause, stating that they will not leave until their demands are met.
Among the protesters was Saurav Kushwaha, a 17-year-old student from Madhya Pradesh who recently cleared his 12th school-leaving exams. Kushwaha expressed frustration with the government’s indifference to the concerns of its youth voters.
The CJP has called for Pradhan’s resignation, and the protesters are demanding accountability for past controversies in the education sector. The movement is seen as a response to the government’s perceived lack of transparency and its treatment of dissenting voices.
Dipke addressed the crowd, stating that the warning to the Modi government is simple: get the education minister to resign or face further action. The protesters’ determination has sparked attention, with many calling for greater accountability from the government.
