Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s Video Removed After Backlash
A video titled “point blank shot” featuring Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has been deleted from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Assam after it sparked widespread criticism and public outrage. The 17-second clip, which appeared to combine original footage of Sarma handling a rifle with AI-generated images showing him shooting at two Muslim men, was shared on X and circulated widely on social media before being removed.
The video included images of Sarma dressed as a cowboy and pointing a pistol, overlaid with text such as “Foreigner free Assam”. The BJP unit in Assam has not officially commented on the incident. However, opposition politicians have condemned the video, calling it “deeply disturbing” and accusing the BJP of promoting xenophobic rhetoric.
The chief minister has recently escalated his rhetoric against Muslims, particularly those of Bengali origin in Assam, linking them to crime and demographic change. Last month, he called on Assam residents to give “Miya Muslims”, a derogatory term for Bengali-speaking Muslims, a “hard time”.
Human rights groups have reported an increase in hate speech and violence against Muslims in recent years, particularly under the BJP government. The video’s removal has been seen as a response to public pressure, but it remains unclear whether the BJP will take further action to address concerns about its rhetoric.
The incident highlights tensions between the BJP and opposition parties in Assam, where Muslims form one-third of the population. The state is expected to go to elections in March or April, with the BJP facing criticism for its handling of minority issues.
