Australia to Implement Bird Flu Response Measures Following Confirmed Case

Australian Government Confirms First Mainland Bird Flu Case

The Australian government has confirmed its first mainland case of H5N1 bird flu, a highly pathogenic avian influenza virus. The infected seabird was found in Western Australia’s Cape Le Grand National Park.

According to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, the discovery is concerning and his government will take all necessary measures to restrict any further spread of the virus. This marks the first mainland case in Australia, following earlier detection on Heard Island, a sub-Antarctic territory.

Agriculture Minister Julie Collins stated that the virus has not yet been detected in Australia’s poultry or agriculture sector. However, she acknowledged that the country could no longer claim to be bird flu-free.

The H5N1 virus has led to significant culling of birds globally, resulting in disruptions to food supplies and price increases. Human infections remain rare but have had a substantial impact on global avian populations.

Tests have confirmed the presence of the virus in two seabirds found in Western Australia’s Cape Le Grand National Park. A giant petrel was also suspected to be infected with the virus. The Australian government will continue to monitor the situation and take action as necessary to prevent further spread of the virus.
