Haiti’s Citadelle Laferriere Sees Deadly Stampede During Annual Celebration
A stampede occurred at the Citadelle Laferriere, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Haiti’s northern countryside, resulting in at least 30 deaths and potentially more. The incident took place on Saturday during an annual celebration at the fortress, which was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1982.
According to authorities, the citadel was heavily attended by students and visitors, including many young people. The rain further contributed to the disaster. Jean Henri Petit, head of Civil Protection for Haiti’s Nord Department, stated that the stampede occurred at the entrance to the site.
Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aime has extended his condolences to the families of those affected and assured them of his solidarity during this time. Culture Minister Emmanuel Menard confirmed the deaths in a written message, stating that the injured are receiving medical care and a rescue team is searching for missing persons.
The incident occurred amidst ongoing violence by gangs and an increased security crackdown in Haiti. The country has faced various disasters in recent years, including fuel tank explosions and earthquakes.
