Australian Cities Host Protests Against Israeli Occupation
Protesters in Sydney and Melbourne gathered in large numbers on Monday, calling for an end to Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory. The demonstrations were part of a nationwide campaign, with thousands of people taking to the streets in both cities.
In Sydney, police used pepper spray against pro-Palestine protesters who had gathered in the city’s business district. At least 15 demonstrators were arrested during the confrontation, and media members covering the event were also affected by the pepper spray.
Meanwhile, in Melbourne, thousands of protesters gathered outside downtown Flinders Street Railway Station before marching to the State Library. The protests continued despite a court challenge by Palestine Action Group organisers being rejected earlier that day.
A 20-year-old woman was arrested after allegedly burning two flags and causing fire damage to a tram stop. Police released her but said she would face wilful damage charges.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog met with victims’ families at Bondi Beach on Monday, where he had also laid a wreath in the rain to honour those killed during a Hanukkah celebration that took place there last December. The Israeli president stated that the attack was an “attack on all Australians” and expressed solidarity, friendship, and love.
The protests were part of a nationwide campaign, with more demonstrations planned across Australia on Monday night.
