Ugandan Opposition Leader Claims Escape After Police and Army Raid
Uganda’s opposition leader, Bobi Wine, has confirmed that he escaped a police and army raid on his home hours before President Yoweri Museveni was declared the winner in the presidential election. According to Wine, he managed to escape from the raiders.
Wine stated that his wife and other family members remain under house arrest. He claimed that security forces had placed him under house arrest, but his party later reported that he was “forcibly taken” from his residence by an army helicopter. The military has denied this allegation.
The election campaign was marred by reports of widespread repression and intimidation, according to the United Nations. Museveni, 81, was declared the winner by the country’s election commission on Saturday, extending his 40-year rule. There were at least 10 reported deaths and intimidation of opposition figures during the election.
Wine has rejected the results of the election, alleging ballot stuffing and the detention of other leaders from his party, the National Unity Platform. He also accused authorities of employing fraudulent techniques to usurp the will of the people.
