Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro Hospitalized with Bronchopneumonia
Brazilian far-right former President Jair Bolsonaro, 70, is currently receiving treatment in an intensive care unit at the DF Star hospital in Brasilia. According to a statement released by the hospital on Saturday, Bolsonaro’s condition has been classified as stable despite being diagnosed with worsening kidney function.
Bolsonaro was admitted to the hospital the previous day after experiencing symptoms including high fever, low oxygen saturation, sweating, and chills. The former president has a history of medical issues stemming from a 2018 stabbing incident at a campaign rally.
The Brazilian Supreme Court has rejected Bolsonaro’s lawyers’ request for house arrest due to his ongoing health needs. Bolsonaro was convicted in September last year on charges related to attempting to overturn the 2022 presidential election, which he lost to left-wing leader Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
Bolsonaro’s son, Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, has been designated as his chosen successor for the upcoming presidential election scheduled for October. The senator stated that his father is in a stable condition and expressed concern about his ongoing health issues.
The hospital has not provided a timeline for Bolsonaro’s discharge.
