Canadian Prime Minister to Visit Tumbler Ridge Following Mass Shooting
Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced plans to visit the town of Tumbler Ridge in British Columbia, where a mass shooting occurred earlier this week, resulting in nine fatalities. The incident involved 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar, who was found dead by suicide after killing her mother and stepbrother, as well as a teacher and five students at the local school.
According to police, Van Rootselaar had been the subject of several visits from authorities to address mental health concerns, but she had previously been released twice following formal assessments. The police department is still investigating the motive behind the shooting.
In response to the tragedy, Canadian flags will be flown at half-staff on federal buildings for seven days. Provincial officials have held meetings with police to discuss the case and provide support to the community.
The town of Tumbler Ridge has observed an official day of mourning, with unofficial memorials set up in public spaces featuring flowers and stuffed animals. Local residents have expressed their grief, with one father stating that he would tell his children how much he loves them every day.
British Columbia Premier David Eby has reached out to local health officials to request more information about the interactions between Van Rootselaar and authorities. Provincial Lieutenant-Governor Wendy Cocchia is scheduled to deliver a speech in the legislature to honor the victims.
In Toronto, the CN Tower will dim its lights at the top of every hour for five minutes each day to pay tribute to the victims of the tragedy.
