Teams qualify for 2026 World Cup Round of 32 knockout stage

FIFA World Cup 2026 Knockout Stage Format and Qualification Criteria Revealed

The FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stage format, criteria, and rules for qualification have been confirmed. The round of 32 will take place from June 28 to July 3, marking the beginning of the tournament’s knockout phase.

Twelve groups of four teams each will determine the top two teams in each group, as well as the eight best third-place finishers, who will advance to the knockouts. The knockout phase will consist of the round of 32, followed by the round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, and a playoff for third place.

FIFA has introduced head-to-head records as the primary tiebreaker for teams level on points, replacing goal difference for the first time at a World Cup. This change applies to all groups where two or more teams are tied on points after the group stage ends.

The knockout phase will feature the following stages: round of 32 (June 28-July 3), round of 16 (July 4-9), quarterfinals (July 10-15), semifinals (July 16-17), and a playoff for third place. The final match is scheduled to take place on July 19.

As the tournament progresses, teams will be eliminated or advance to the next stage based on their performance. Haiti and Turkey have been eliminated due to their inability to catch up with the third-placed teams in their respective groups.

The top two teams from each group, along with the eight best third-place finishers, will compete in the knockout phase. The schedule for the tournament is as follows:

  • Round of 32: June 28-July 3
  • Round of 16: July 4-9
  • Quarterfinals: July 10-15
  • Semifinals: July 16-17
  • Playoff for third place: July 18
  • Final: July 19
