Cape Verde to Make World Cup Debut in North America
Cape Verde, an archipelago of 10 islands in the Atlantic Ocean, will make its highly anticipated debut at the FIFA World Cup in North America. The country, which is one of 10 African representatives, has qualified directly for the tournament after a successful performance in the first round of CAF qualifying.
The Cape Verde national team, nicknamed “Blue Sharks,” celebrated their historic qualification on the 50th anniversary of their independence from Portugal. This milestone coincided with their impressive achievement in topping a difficult group alongside Cameroon and Angola, winning eight of their 10 games to secure their spot at the World Cup.
Cape Verde’s qualification was marked by a 100% record in five home games and not conceding a goal, which proved pivotal to their progress. The team finished Group D on 23 points, four ahead of Cameroon, who ultimately crashed out in the second round.
With a population of around 600,000 inhabitants and only 4,000 square kilometers of land, Cape Verde is the third-smallest country to qualify for the World Cup after Curacao and Iceland. The team has played at four Africa Cup of Nations, with their best result being reaching the quarter-finals in 2013.
Cape Verde will be competing in Group H alongside Spain, Uruguay, Saudi Arabia, and Argentina. All group matches will be played in the US. The team is led by head coach Bubista, a former international player who has been in charge of the national team for six-and-a-half years.
Key players include forward Dailon Livramento, midfielder Jamiro Monteiro, and winger Willy Semedo, who scored two goals each during qualification. Captain Ryan Mendes, goalkeeper Vozinha, and defender Roberto Lopes are also part of the team that fought for 2022 World Cup qualification.
Cape Verde has a diverse squad with players based in several countries, including Portugal, the Netherlands, and the US. The team will face Chile and Finland in friendlies in New Zealand as part of the FIFA Series, sponsored biennial tournaments for mainly lower-ranked and lesser-financed nations.
