Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar Visits China Amid Ongoing Diplomatic Efforts
Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Monday that Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar would travel to Beijing the following day. The visit is part of ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at brokering negotiations between the US and Iran.
According to the ministry, Dar will hold “in-depth discussions” with Chinese officials on regional developments and bilateral issues of mutual interest. The two countries have a longstanding strategic cooperative partnership.
Dar’s visit comes as Islamabad hosts foreign ministers from Turkiye, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia for a quadrilateral meeting aimed at pushing the US and Iran towards negotiations. The meeting is part of efforts to calm tensions in the region, which has seen multiple theatres of conflict expand across the Middle East.
Despite medical advice to rest following a hairline shoulder fracture sustained after slipping while receiving Egypt’s foreign minister in Islamabad on Sunday, Dar will travel to China. Chinese officials have expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s efforts to cool down the situation and have offered support for mediation efforts.
Analysts say Dar’s visit is aimed at briefing the Chinese leadership on the recently concluded quadrilateral meeting and refining principles for a potential US-Iran dialogue. The five principles include an immediate ceasefire, resumption of talks, protection of civilians, maritime security, and adherence to the United Nations Charter.
China and Pakistan have announced these principles as the cornerstone of their mediation efforts. Dar’s visit is seen as part of Pakistan’s established intermediary role in facilitating diplomatic efforts between China and other countries.
