China’s President Xi Jinping has reaffirmed his country’s commitment to its “all-weather” partnership with Pakistan during a meeting with visiting Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Beijing. The two leaders described their relationship as an “unbreakable traditional friendship”. China considers Pakistan one of its strategic partners, and the two countries have close ties in areas such as trade, security, and economic cooperation.
During the meeting, Xi emphasized the importance of China-Pakistan relations in his country’s neighbourhood diplomacy. He stated that Beijing will continue to prioritize the development of their relationship, regardless of changes in the international situation. Sharif, in turn, referred to China and Pakistan as “iron brother” countries with a strong bond.
The visit comes as Pakistan plays a key role in mediating talks between the United States and Iran over the US-Israel conflict on Iran. The Pakistani army chief, Asim Munir, accompanied Sharif during his meeting with Chinese leaders. According to reports, Xi expressed appreciation for Islamabad’s constructive role in promoting peace in the Middle East.
China has also issued a five-point initiative with Pakistan, calling for peace talks and restoration of normal navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. The two countries have strengthened their ties in recent months, including a meeting between their foreign ministers in March.
