European Union Imposes Sanctions on Israeli Settler Groups and Leaders
The European Union has issued its latest tranche of sanctions against four entities and three individuals associated with Israeli settler groups. The sanctioned entities include Regavim, founded by Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, and the Amana cooperative association, which provides logistical and financial support to settlements in the occupied West Bank.
Regavim’s director, Meir Deutsch, and movement leader Daniella Weiss were also targeted by the EU sanctions. Weiss has held conferences on the Gaza border to discuss plans for settlement expansion into the occupied Palestinian territory. The EU has imposed penalties on these groups and individuals, which they have described as “ridiculous” and “banal”.
The European Union has sanctioned Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, a son of the settler movement, by several countries including the United Kingdom and Canada for his alleged role in supporting or enabling violence in the West Bank.
Activists claim that the EU sanctions do not reflect the depth of violence committed by settler groups or the state’s complicity in these attacks. The targeted figures and entities have responded to the sanctions with a nonchalant attitude, suggesting that they may not be significantly affected by the measures.
According to activists and observers, the EU’s focus on individual “violations” falls short of articulating the scale of coordinated settler attacks or the extent to which the state supports them. The United Nations and human rights monitors have documented systemic lethal settler attacks in various locations, including the South Hebron Hills and the northern West Bank.
The Israeli government is accused of providing tacit support for these settler attacks, with residents of villages such as Susiya and Umm al-Khair having been killed or seriously injured in collective incursions. Entire Bedouin herding communities have also been forcibly displaced following sustained campaigns of intimidation and violence.
Statistics indicate that Israeli forces and settlers have been involved in the deaths of an estimated 1,168 people and injuries to a further 12,666 Palestinians in the occupied West Bank since October 2023. Additionally, nearly 23,000 Palestinians have been detained without charge, while 33,000 people have been displaced.
