Colombia defeats Uzbekistan in World Cup 2026 opener

Colombia Opens FIFA World Cup Campaign with 3-1 Victory Over Uzbekistan

Colombia kicked off their FIFA World Cup Group K campaign with a 3-1 win over Uzbekistan at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on Wednesday. The match, attended by an estimated 80,000 spectators, saw Colombia’s Luis Diaz score a goal and set up another for teammate Daniel Munoz.

Uzbekistan, coached by Italian Fabio Cannavaro, had a disciplined performance but ultimately struggled to contain Colombia’s greater quality. Colombian players Jhon Arias and James Rodriguez had early opportunities, but Uzbekistan sat deep and waited for mistakes.

In the 40th minute, Diaz’s fine pass set up Munoz for his third international goal, giving Colombia an early lead. The match remained scoreless until the hour mark, when Uzbekistan equalized with their first World Cup goal. However, Colombia regained the lead in the 65th minute through Diaz’s side-footed shot.

Uzbekistan pushed hard to equalize but ultimately fell short. In stoppage time, Colombian player Jaminton Campaz scored the winning goal, securing a 3-1 victory for Colombia. The match marked Colombia’s strong start to their World Cup campaign, with the team now facing DR Congo in their next match on Tuesday.

Colombia will face Portugal in their next match on the same day in Houston, while Uzbekistan play against Portugal as well. The FIFA World Cup is set to begin on June 11.
