Colombian presidential election outcome defies pre-election polling predictions

Colombia’s Presidential Election Heads to Runoff

The presidential election in Colombia is set to proceed to a runoff on June 21, with two candidates emerging from the initial round of voting. Far-right outsider Abelardo de la Espriella and leftist senator Ivan Cepeda will compete for the top spot.

According to recent polls, de la Espriella’s candidacy has garnered significant attention, surpassing expectations in some regions. The professor Jorge Restrepo notes that de la Espriella’s rise in the polls may be attributed to voter dissatisfaction with Colombia’s established political class.

The initial round of voting saw a diverse range of candidates participate, but ultimately, two individuals secured enough votes to advance to the runoff. De la Espriella and Cepeda will now face off in the second round, with the winner set to take office on July 20.

Colombia’s presidential election is scheduled to be held on June 21, with citizens casting their ballots for one of the two remaining candidates. The outcome of this runoff will determine the country’s next leader and shape its future trajectory.
