Cricket Club Imposes Social Media Ban to Protect Players Mental Health

Kent Cricket Club Suspends Social Media Comments Amid Concerns Over Player Well-being

The Kent cricket club has temporarily suspended comments on their official social media accounts, following concerns raised by head coach Adam Hollioake about the potential impact of criticism on players’ mental health. The decision was made ahead of the team’s latest match against Derbyshire at Canterbury.

In a statement released before the game, Hollioake acknowledged that the team’s performances had not met expectations, saying they were “not anywhere near the standards we expect of ourselves.” However, he emphasized his duty as coach to protect the well-being of the players. Hollioake has spoken publicly about his own experiences with mental health issues, including the loss of two close friends and teammates: Graham Thorpe, who took his own life in 2024, and Robin Smith, who struggled with alcoholism before his death last year.

The club’s decision to suspend social media comments is intended to allow players and staff to focus on their performance without external pressure. The move has been made in conjunction with the team’s media department, which will continue to receive feedback from fans but will refrain from posting comments that may be perceived as critical or negative.
