Venezuela Struck by Twin Earthquakes in Recent Geological Activity

Venezuela Experiences Devastating Earthquakes, Widespread Disruption

Two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela on Wednesday, causing widespread destruction and disruption to the country’s infrastructure. The quakes, which had magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, occurred within a minute of each other near the coastal town of Moron, approximately 170km west of Caracas.

According to authorities, at least 32 people have been confirmed dead and over 700 injured as a result of the earthquakes. The country’s main airport has been closed, and residents are fleeing into the streets due to the severity of the situation.

Acting President Delcy Rodriguez declared a state of emergency late on Wednesday in response to the disaster. He warned that the death toll was expected to rise as rescuers search collapsed structures and attempt to reach remote areas.

The twin quakes are among the strongest to hit Venezuela in over a century, with major seismic events being relatively rare in the country compared to other parts of Latin America.
