Cuba Holds May Day Celebrations Amid Ongoing US Diplomatic Tensions

Cuban Workers Celebrate International Workers’ Day Amid US Sanctions

Havana, Cuba - On Friday, Cuban workers gathered in the capital to mark International Workers’ Day, also known as May Day. The event took place amidst an announcement by the US government of additional sanctions targeting individuals and entities involved in the country’s security services.

The White House statement said the sanctions would target those providing support to the Cuban government, including material supporters and individuals involved in the security sector. The statement also claimed that Cuba serves as a “safe haven for transnational terrorist groups,” citing Hezbollah as an example.

US President Donald Trump has previously threatened military action against Cuba, alongside increased economic pressure. The country’s economy is already struggling due to a US energy blockade, which has led to widespread energy blackouts.

Cuban workers took part in the celebrations, including former leader Raul Castro and President Miguel Diaz-Canel. Participants expressed their commitment to providing essential services despite the challenges posed by the sanctions. Yunier Merino Reyes, an accountant with the Electric Union, stated that his colleagues are working tirelessly to provide electricity to those who need it.

The event marked a show of resilience among Cuban workers, who demonstrated their determination to defend their homeland despite external pressures.
