Cuba Approves Emergency Economic Package Amid Ongoing US Pressure Campaign
The Communist Party of Cuba has approved an emergency economic package, which includes unprecedented free-market measures, as part of its efforts to address the country’s dire economic situation. The package was submitted to the National Assembly on Thursday and is expected to pass.
The plan aims to expand opportunities for private enterprise, attract additional foreign investment, and create a more favorable business environment. It would also allow private banks to enter Cuba’s finance sector and enable private real estate development on the island.
President Miguel Diaz-Canel stated that the country’s economic situation cannot be attributed solely to external pressure, citing domestic factors such as bureaucratic inefficiencies and delayed decision-making. He acknowledged that some of the current economic challenges are due to internal obstacles, including “slowness” and “norms that impede production”.
The European Union has also increased pressure on Cuba, passing a resolution calling for sanctions against Diaz-Canel and other high-ranking officials. The EU resolution condemned what it described as “systematic repression” by the Cuban government.
Former Cuban leader Raul Castro has expressed support for the economic plan, while US officials have suggested that economic reforms could ease Washington’s pressure campaign against Cuba. However, no immediate response was received from the Trump administration regarding the latest developments.
US Vice President JD Vance stated that the US is seeking to improve relations with Cuba and promote “smart decisions” by the Cuban government. The US has previously floated options for military intervention or a “friendly takeover” of Cuba, but no further details were provided on these plans.
