Danish Prime Minister Steps Down After General Election Defeat

Danish Prime Minister Submits Resignation Amid Coalition Talks

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has submitted her government’s resignation to the king following a general election, according to a statement from the royal palace. The Social Democratic Party, led by Frederiksen, suffered a significant defeat in the election, winning only 38 seats out of 179 in the parliament.

The party’s performance was down from 50 seats four years ago, and it is believed that voter concerns over immigration, cost-of-living crisis, and welfare issues contributed to the loss. The left-wing bloc won 84 seats, while the right-leaning parties secured 77 seats, both falling short of the required majority.

The Moderates Party, led by Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen, holds 14 seats that could be crucial in determining the next government’s composition. The party is considered a centrist group and may play a key role in coalition talks.

Frederiksen’s Social Democratic Party remains Denmark’s largest party, with 21.9% support, which could potentially lead to her return as prime minister following coalition negotiations. Domestic policy issues dominated the election, overshadowing Frederiksen’s stance on US President Donald Trump’s ambitions to acquire Greenland.
