FIFA Faces Criticism Over World Cup Ticket Prices
The FIFA World Cup 2026 is set to take place in the US, Canada, and Mexico, with ticket prices sparking controversy among fans. The average cost of a ticket for the World Cup final on July 19 in East Rutherford, New Jersey, has been reported to be $13,000.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino defended the cost of seats, stating that they are comparable to prices for major US sporting events. According to reports, 25% of group-stage tickets can be purchased for less than $300. However, fans have expressed concerns over the high costs, with some arguing that it may limit attendance from working-class Americans.
US President Donald Trump recently expressed his disapproval of the ticket prices, stating he would not pay $1,000 to watch a match between the US and Paraguay on June 12 in Los Angeles. Trump claimed he was unaware of the prices and acknowledged that he would not be able to afford them.
FIFA has released some tickets for sale, offering fans an opportunity to purchase them at first-come, first-served basis. According to TicketData.com, the current average price for Group Stage games is $567, down from $684 14 days ago and $720 from 30 days ago.
The ticket prices have been a subject of concern among fans, with some reporting high prices on resale markets. For example, a pair of resale tickets was listed for $2,725.10, while another listing showed the price climbing to $2,770.90 for seats in the upper deck. FIFA takes a 15% purchase fee from buyers and sellers.
The World Cup will be played at 16 sites across the three countries, with fans eagerly anticipating the event.
