Donald Trumps interest in Irans Kharg Island remains unclear

US President Donald Trump has issued a warning to Iran, stating that he is prepared to take control of Kharg Island or destroy it if Tehran does not agree to a deal soon. The island, located off the coast of Iran, serves as the country’s main oil export hub and is home to nearly all of its exports.

According to reports, Trump has threatened to use military force to seize the island, either by deploying troops on the ground or by destroying it entirely. This ultimatum comes as the US-Israel war on Iran enters its second month.

Experts have weighed in on the potential implications of controlling Kharg Island for the ongoing conflict. Negar Mortazavi, a senior fellow at the Center for International Policy, noted that the island’s strategic importance cannot be overstated. “Kharg Island is a critical component of Iran’s oil export infrastructure,” she stated.

Matthew Kroenig, vice president at the Atlantic Council, emphasized the potential consequences of Trump’s actions. “The use of military force to seize Kharg Island would likely escalate tensions in the region and have far-reaching implications for global energy markets.”

Alexandre Vautravers, a defence policy specialist, added that the situation remains fluid and uncertain. “It is unclear whether Trump will follow through on his threats or if Iran will comply with his demands,” he said.

The situation surrounding Kharg Island remains a pressing concern in the ongoing conflict between the US and Iran.
