FIFA World Cup Ticket Prices Spark Controversy
The 23rd edition of the FIFA World Cup has seen ticket prices skyrocket to over $2 million for the final match, prompting criticism from longtime sports executive Peter Moore. According to Moore, dynamic pricing is a major contributor to the high costs, which he believes undermines the spirit of the tournament.
Moore, who served as chief executive of Liverpool FC from 2017-2020, has expressed concerns that FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s decision to implement dynamic pricing has led to tickets being sold to bots and speculators rather than genuine fans. “Dynamic pricing doesn’t belong in the World Cup and football,” Moore stated. “It works with music, but for the World Cup, there are hundreds of thousands of people booking trips in advance.”
Moore also questioned FIFA’s decision to take a 30% cut of dynamic pricing revenue, calling it “outrageous.” He noted that this policy has resulted in tickets being sold at exorbitant prices, making it difficult for genuine fans to attend matches.
The high ticket prices have been accompanied by other logistical challenges, including travel bans imposed by the US government on fans from certain countries. Moore expressed concern that these restrictions may limit the diversity of attendees and undermine the tournament’s authenticity.
FIFA has defended its pricing policy, citing the World Cup as a major source of revenue for the organization. However, some have argued that the high costs are unsustainable and may drive away genuine fans. The controversy surrounding ticket prices highlights the need for FIFA to strike a balance between generating revenue and ensuring accessibility for all fans.
