Ecuador Military Detainees Disappear Under Investigation
At least 50 individuals have been detained by security forces in Ecuador since 2024, with a significant number of them experiencing unexplained disappearances. The country is currently engaged in a military campaign against drug cartels, resulting in record-high levels of violence.
According to reports, one family has obtained video footage showing their relative being taken into custody by soldiers on December 2024. Jonathan Villon, a father of three, was seen being transported in the back of a military truck before his disappearance. His whereabouts remain unknown.
Investigative files have been obtained by Fault Lines, which are shedding light on the circumstances surrounding Villon’s disappearance and other cases involving detained individuals who have not been accounted for. One such case involves four boys, known as the “Malvinas 4”, who were detained by air force officers before being found dead.
The government has acknowledged the incidents and is taking steps to address them. However, many families of those affected are still seeking answers and justice. An investigation into these events is ongoing.
