Kimi Antonelli Secures Pole Position at Monaco Grand Prix
Kimi Antonelli has become the first Italian to take pole position in the Monaco Grand Prix since Jarno Trulli in 2004. The 19-year-old championship leader secured the top spot with a qualifying lap time of 1:12.051, edging out Red Bull’s Max Verstappen by 0.043 seconds.
The qualifying session saw multiple changes to provisional pole, with Antonelli ultimately emerging victorious. He credited his final lap as “magic” and expressed relief that it was enough to secure the top spot. The young driver has now claimed his fourth pole in six races this season.
Ferrari had been heavily favored for the race but were unable to capitalize on their practice sessions, finishing second on the grid behind Hamilton’s third-quickest time. Local favorite Charles Leclerc finished fourth after clipping the wall during his final lap of qualifying.
Other drivers fared less well, with Isack Hadjar bouncing back from a crash in Friday practice to finish fifth and George Russell sixth. Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri will start on the fourth row, while reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton expressed admiration for Antonelli’s performance.
The Monaco Grand Prix has historically been a challenging circuit, with only six drivers out of 22 winners not starting from pole position. The unique layout of the track makes overtaking extremely difficult, making Antonelli’s achievement all the more impressive.
