Egypt Plans Live-Fire Drills in Sinai, Causing Concern Among Israeli Residents
Residents along the border between Israel and Egypt have expressed alarm over plans for live-fire drills in the Sinai Peninsula. According to reports, the Egyptian military has coordinated the exercises with Israel within the terms of the 1979 peace treaty between the two countries.
The drills are set to take place in Zone C, which is the area closest to the Israeli border, and will involve lightly armed police and international observers. However, some residents have expressed concerns about the proximity of the drills to their homes, particularly those living near Gaza.
One resident from Bnei Netzarim, a town near the border, stated that she fears the drills may be used as cover for smuggling or raids. The Forum for Israel’s Border Communities has also issued a statement expressing its concern over the drills, stating that they resemble patterns seen in the lead-up to the October 7 attack in 2023.
The group warned against creating “dangerous norms” and appealed to Israeli leaders to halt the drills. However, it is unlikely that the drills will be halted, as they are within the terms of the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel.
Under the treaty, Sinai is divided into zones with strict limits on military deployments. The area closest to the Israeli border, Zone C, has restrictions in place, including only allowing lightly armed police and international observers. Any deployment or activity involving regular army forces near the frontier would normally require prior coordination and Israeli approval.
Egypt and Israel have maintained a “cold peace” since their 1979 treaty, with significant economic and security cooperation between the two countries. However, tensions have been rising in recent months, particularly over issues related to Gaza and Iran.
