England Qualifies for 2026 World Cup, but Squad Selection Raises Concerns
England has secured its spot in the 2026 World Cup, becoming the first European team to qualify with a 100% record. The Three Lions strolled through their group stage, defeating all four opponents and conceding zero goals.
However, some fans are expressing concerns over the squad selection and recent performances against top teams. Chelsea’s Cole Palmer and Manchester City’s Phil Foden were left out of the 26-man squad, while Real Madrid’s Trent Alexander-Arnold and Manchester United’s Harry Maguire also missed the cut. In contrast, striker Ivan Toney, who plays for Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ahli, has made the team.
Nine members of the squad have no previous tournament experience. Manager Thomas Tuchel defended his selections, citing the importance of unity and chemistry within the team. “Teams win championships,” he said. “Everything I know about international football is that it’s about the team and the chemistry.”
Tuchel has faced criticism over England’s style of play, which remains slow and sideways at times. However, his solidly organized side won their group with a 100% record.
England’s captain and record goalscorer, Harry Kane, will be crucial to the team’s success in North America. If he can field a relatively fresh Kane, he should be confident following his best-ever season in front of goal.
The 2026 World Cup is scheduled to take place in June, with England facing Croatia, Ghana, and Panama in their group stage matches.
