Ethiopia to Hold General Elections After Four-Year Peace Deal
Ethiopia will conduct its first general elections since a peace deal was reached in Tigray, four years after the formal end of the country’s conflict in the region. The elections are scheduled to take place, with millions of citizens expected to cast their votes.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s Prosperity Party is widely anticipated to perform well in the polls. However, some opposition parties have expressed concerns that they will be excluded from participating in the election process.
In Tigray and Amhara regions, where the conflict had a significant impact, millions of citizens are barred from voting due to restrictions on voter registration. The opposition has accused the government of limiting the participation of certain competing parties.
The elections mark an important milestone for Ethiopia’s transition towards democracy. The country has been working to rebuild its institutions and strengthen its democratic framework since the end of the conflict in Tigray.
The Prosperity Party, led by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, has been a dominant force in Ethiopian politics since coming to power in 2018. The party’s performance in the upcoming elections will be closely watched by domestic and international observers.
The government has announced that the elections will be conducted in accordance with the country’s electoral laws and regulations. The outcome of the polls is expected to shape Ethiopia’s future political landscape.
