European Troops Arrive in Greenland Amid US Talks Stalemate Over Future Plans

European Countries Send Troops to Greenland to Enhance Security

A joint military operation has begun in Greenland, with soldiers from France, Germany, Norway, and Sweden arriving on the island to bolster security. The mission, which involves troops planting the European Union’s flag as a symbolic gesture, is being led by Denmark.

According to French President Emmanuel Macron, the two-day mission aims to demonstrate the EU’s ability to quickly deploy troops in response to emerging situations. France has already sent 15 soldiers to Nuuk, Greenland’s capital, with more personnel expected to follow.

Germany has also deployed a reconnaissance team of 13 personnel to Greenland on Thursday. Denmark announced plans to increase its military presence on the island earlier this week, following discussions with US officials.

The US has expressed interest in taking control of Greenland, citing concerns over Russian and Chinese involvement in the region. However, European allies have expressed disagreement with this approach.

In a statement, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said that despite efforts to dissuade Washington from pursuing its goals, “the American position remains unchanged.” His counterpart, Greenlandic Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt, emphasized the need for cooperation but also made it clear that Greenland does not want to be “owned” by the US.

The situation has sparked concerns among Inuit communities in Greenland, who fear the potential impact on their way of life. The US has stated its intention to tap Greenland’s mineral resources, which has raised fears about the country’s sovereignty.

Moscow has criticized Western actions on Greenland, describing them as an attempt to justify aggression against Russia and China. The Russian Foreign Ministry has expressed solidarity with China’s position on the issue.

The joint military operation is ongoing, with more details expected in the coming days.
