EU Agrees to Impose Sanctions on Israeli Settlers and Hamas Leaders
A meeting of European Union member states’ foreign ministers has reached a consensus on imposing sanctions on Israeli settlers and leading Hamas figures. The measures, targeting three Israeli settlers and four settler organizations, were blocked by Hungary’s former government but have now been approved.
The EU foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, stated that the agreement marks a move from deadlock to delivery, emphasizing that “extremisms and violence carry consequences.” French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot welcomed the turnaround, saying that the EU is sanctioning organizations responsible for supporting extremist and violent colonization of the West Bank.
Israel has condemned the measures, asserting its right to settle in the occupied West Bank despite international law. The country’s foreign minister, Gideon Saar, stated that the sanctions are arbitrary and based on political views without a basis. National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir described the EU as “antisemitic,” claiming that it is trying to restrict the rights of those defending themselves.
The EU has also decided to sanction the leadership of Hamas, whose armed wing was involved in an attack on southern Israel from Gaza in October 2023 that killed around 1,200 people. French Foreign Minister Barrot stated that these sanctions are necessary to address “most serious and intolerable acts” by Hamas leaders.
Hamas officials have responded by accusing the EU of political hypocrisy and racism, arguing that it is equating a fascist executioner with the victim who defends themselves according to all laws and statutes. The EU’s decision comes as more than 500,000 Israelis live in the occupied West Bank, while over three million Palestinians reside there.
The sanctions package targets specific individuals and organizations involved in violence against Palestinians in the West Bank. The measures are expected to have significant implications for Israel and Hamas, with both sides condemning the decision.
