European Commission Launches Investigation into Shein’s E-commerce Platform
The European Commission has initiated an investigation into Singapore-based e-commerce platform Shein over concerns regarding the sale of illicit goods on its website. The probe follows a discovery by France’s consumer watchdog in November that childlike sex dolls were available on Shein’s platform, sparking widespread attention.
According to the commission, it suspects that Shein’s internal systems may pose a systemic risk for consumers across the European Union. As part of its Digital Services Act (DSA) proceedings, the commission will gather evidence, conduct interviews, and request information from Shein or third parties.
Shein has stated that it will cooperate with the investigation, sharing its objective of ensuring a safe and trusted online environment. The company’s previous responses to the commission’s requests for information have been acknowledged, including a recent inquiry regarding the sale of childlike sex dolls and weapons.
This investigation is part of a broader effort by regulators across Europe, the United States, and South Asia to address concerns about major tech platforms spreading illicit content. Other probes are underway into Chinese online retailer AliExpress and social media platforms Facebook, Instagram, X, and TikTok.
The European Commission’s Digital Services Act aims to protect consumers and combat the spread of illicit goods and services across the EU. The investigation into Shein is ongoing, with the commission continuing to gather evidence and information.
