UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese Presents Report on Human Rights Situation in Occupied Palestinian Territory
A report by the United Nations’ special rapporteur on the rights situation in the occupied Palestinian territory has found that torture has become a widespread practice in Israel. The report, titled “Torture and genocide,” was presented to the UN Human Rights Council by Francesca Albanese, who described the human rights situation as one of “physical and mental suffering.”
According to the report, Israel’s actions have led to mass displacement, siege, denial of aid and food, unrestrained military violence, and pervasive surveillance. The occupied Palestinian territory has become a space where collective punishment is practiced, resulting in long-term mental and physical consequences for the population.
The report highlights the cumulative impact of these actions, which include the arrest of over 18,500 Palestinians since October 2023, including at least 1,500 children. The Gaza Ministry of Health reports that at least 72,263 people have been killed and 171,944 others injured in Israeli attacks on Gaza since October 7, 2023.
The UN special rapporteur has faced criticism from Israel and the United States, with calls for her removal from the position. In response to the report, Israel’s mission to the UN stated that Albanese makes “virulent antisemitic” statements and supports terrorist organizations.
Albanese called on UN member states to prevent and punish acts of torture and genocide, and uphold international law. She emphasized that the increasing use of torture as part of Israel’s actions against Palestinians makes this violation grave and indefensible.
The report has sparked a response from Albanese, who urged the international community to take action to prevent such acts and uphold the law.
